Concrete for a Fast-Growing Town

Battle Ground has grown quickly, and concrete contractors working in town see it in yards and driveways. Census counts went from 1,334 residents in 2010 to 1,838 in 2020, up 37.8%, while the number of homes rose from 530 to 706. Plenty of that newer housing still lacks what the builder left out: a patio, a path to the back yard or a wider drive.

When the builder leaves you a dirt back yard

Many new homes come with a driveway, a front walk and a small stoop at the back door, and that is it. If you are planning a patio, it pays to wait until the yard has settled through a season. Fill dirt around a new foundation compacts over time, and a slab poured too soon over loose backfill can sink at the house edge. When we lay out a patio near a new home we:

  • Probe the backfill zone next to the foundation
  • Dig out loose fill and replace it with compacted stone
  • Tie the slab to the grade so water moves away from the house
  • Set joints so any cracking stays in straight lines

Two creeks and wet spots

Two small creeks frame the town. Burnett Creek follows Battle Ground's west side on its way southwest, and Harrison Creek rises close to town and heads east. Lots on low ground near either one can stay soft well into spring. Pouring on mud is off the table. If a site is wet, the pour waits, or the excavation goes deeper and stone is built up until the slab has something firm to sit on.

The older part of town

The town incorporated in 1867, absorbing neighboring Harrisonville, and its historic district went on the National Register in 1985. Just outside is the site of the Battle of Tippecanoe, fought November 7, 1811; a monument was raised there in 1908, and the battlefield, now a National Historic Landmark, has a museum and recreation area. Houses near the old center tend to have narrow walks, small porch steps and detached garages, so the work there leans toward Sidewalks & Steps or Concrete Repair & Replacement more than new pours.

Walks for a school town

Battle Ground Elementary and Battle Ground Intermediate both sit inside town, and the middle school carries the Battle Ground name too. That puts a lot of small feet, bikes and scooters on front walks and driveway aprons. A raised lip at a sidewalk joint or a stoop with one tall riser is where a kid catches a toe. When a walk is replaced, the new panels are set flush with the neighbors, joints are tooled clean, and the surface gets a broom texture that grips in rain.

In newer subdivisions, it also helps to keep the recorded plat and any drainage easement drawings handy. They show where a slab may and may not go, and they make planning faster.

Matching the job to the service

  • Concrete Driveways: widening a builder's drive or adding a side apron for a boat or camper
  • Concrete Patios: a first patio on a new lot, sized for how you will use it
  • Stamped Concrete: a patterned patio when you want more than plain gray
  • Garage & Shed Slabs: level pads for backyard sheds
  • Concrete Repair & Replacement: cracked or sunken sections on older lots

Before we plan any pour, we check what Tippecanoe County or the town requires for your lot, and if you live in a subdivision, read your covenants for rules on driveway width or shed placement.

Battle Ground Questions

We just built in Battle Ground. When should we pour a patio?

Give the backfill around the foundation time to settle, ideally through a full season of rain and freeze. When we pour, we replace loose fill near the house with compacted stone.

Our lot stays wet in spring. Can we still have a patio?

Yes, but we build it differently. We dig deeper, add more stone base and grade the patio so water drains off. We also time the pour for drier weeks.

Can you widen my driveway without tearing the whole thing out?

Often, yes. We saw-cut a clean edge, dowel the new section to the old one and pour the extension. The color will differ slightly at first.
