One town, two counties

Concrete Contractors in Otterbein, IN

Driveways, shop floors and patios on both sides of the county line.

  • No-cost site visit, then a written price broken out line by line
  • Outdoor pours use air-entrained mix over compacted stone, with joints laid out ahead of time
  • Permit and right-of-way rules looked up for your street before a date is set

Working on Both Sides of the County Line

Otterbein is one of the few towns around Lafayette that crosses a county line, and concrete contractors need to know which side a house is on. The western part of town is in Bolivar Township, Benton County, while eastern sections reach into Shelby Township, Tippecanoe County. Rules for permits and right-of-way work can differ by county, so we confirm your address before we plan anything that touches the street.

A town laid out in 1872

Before it had a name, the spot was called Pond Grove. On October 25, 1872, John Levering and his wife platted 60 lots, and the town was named for William Otterbein Brown, a farmer and stock dealer who gave land for it. The main east-west street, Oxford Street, used to carry US 52; the highway now bypasses the town on its north side, and a rail line runs along the south. Houses on the older streets often have:

  • Narrow front walks poured decades ago
  • Steps that have pulled away from the porch
  • Single-car drives that are too short for modern vehicles
  • Detached garages on aging slabs

Slabs for work buildings

On the east edge of town, mostly on the Tippecanoe County side, an industrial park is home to a truss plant and a trucking firm. Work vehicles and shop buildings are part of life here. When a Garage & Shed Slab has to carry that kind of use, the plan covers:

  • Extra depth where trucks or trailers park
  • Thickened edges under the walls
  • Steel sized for the loads
  • A surface that sweeps easily without turning slick when wet

Driveways that see trucks

Concrete Driveways in Otterbein often need to handle more than a car. If a pickup with a trailer, a box truck or a camper uses the drive, tell us. We size the thickness and base to match. A turnaround pad by the garage can save you from backing a trailer onto the road.

Patios and finishes

For the back yard, Concrete Patios in a broom finish are the low-maintenance choice. Stamped Concrete costs more but adds a stone or brick look. Either way, we slope the slab away from the house and seal it after it cures.

When concrete meets the road

If your driveway apron or a walk runs to the street, that part of the job may be in a public right-of-way. Who controls it depends on whether the street is a town street, a county road or a highway. In a town split between two counties, that question has more than one possible answer. We find out before we plan the apron and handle any permit that is required.

A note on timing

Early fall is a good pouring window here, with mild days and cool nights. Spring works once the ground has dried enough to compact. We avoid exterior pours when hard freezes are forecast unless the slab can be protected.

Rebar or mesh?

Both help hold a cracked slab together. A rebar grid on chairs is stronger and stays where it is set; welded wire mesh is lighter and suits thinner slabs. For drives and shop floors that carry trucks, rebar is the usual call. Neither keeps concrete from cracking in the first place; joints and a good base do that.

Repairs on older concrete

The population slipped from 1,262 in 2010 to 1,144 in 2020, and the housing count from 550 to 522. With few new houses going up, most concrete in town is existing, which makes Concrete Repair & Replacement and Sidewalks & Steps the bulk of the work. We say plainly when a repair will hold and when a slab has to come out.

Otterbein Questions

Does it matter which county my Otterbein home is in?

It can, for permits and for work near the road. We check whether your address is on the Benton or Tippecanoe side before we plan.

Can a regular driveway handle my work truck?

A standard residential drive is built for cars and light trucks. For heavier vehicles or trailers, we build thicker and over a deeper base.

How long before I can park on a new shop slab?

Plan on about a week for cars and light trucks, longer for heavy equipment. We give you a date based on the mix and the weather.
