A Walkable Town Needs Good Walks
Brookston is a compact town where people walk, and concrete contractors here spend a lot of time on sidewalks, steps and short driveways. It was laid out in 1853 and took its name from James Brooks, an official of the railroad, then became an incorporated town in 1867. Some 1,631 people lived there at the 2020 census, in 686 households, with 729 homes packed into about two-thirds of a square mile. The street grid is more than 150 years old, and houses sit close together along it.
Front walks and stoops
On older streets, the concrete people touch most is between the sidewalk and the front door. Common problems:
- A walk that has heaved and left a lip at a joint
- Steps that slope toward the house and send water at the foundation
- A stoop that has pulled away from the porch wall
- Flaking on the surface from years of salt
Sidewalks & Steps is often the right fix. We remove the failed sections, rebuild the base and pour new concrete with even risers, a slight pitch away from the house and a broom finish for grip.
Short drives and alleys
On a tight town lot, a driveway is often short, narrow or reached from an alley. That limits how a concrete truck can reach the pour. We look at access before quoting and plan for a chute, a buggy or a pump if needed. Concrete Driveways on small lots also need careful slope so water reaches the street or alley and not the garage.
September timing
Every year since 1978, Brookston's Apple Popcorn Festival has filled town on the third Saturday of September. If you want a front walk or steps finished before visitors arrive, call well ahead. Early fall is a good time to pour here, with mild days and cool nights that help a slow, even cure, so the calendar fills quickly.
How to tell if your steps are unsafe
Walk them slowly and look for:
- Risers that are different heights
- Treads that tip toward you or toward the house
- A gap between the steps and the porch or wall
- Crumbling edges at the nosing
- A missing or loose handrail anchor
Any one of these is worth a look. Two or more usually means rebuilding the steps is the better choice over patching them. We can pour new steps in a single day of forming and pouring, then cure them before use.
Concrete next to a detached garage
Many older lots have a detached garage at the back. When we pour a patio or walk up to it, we leave an expansion joint where the new slab meets the garage floor or wall so the two can move independently. We also slope the new concrete so it does not send water under the garage door. If the garage floor itself is low or cracked, it may be smart to replace it at the same time so the levels line up.
Back yards and garages
Behind the house, we pour:
- Concrete Patios sized for a small yard, sometimes running up to a detached garage
- Stamped Concrete when you want a patterned patio that looks like brick or stone
- Garage & Shed Slabs to replace a cracked or sunken garage floor
- Concrete Repair & Replacement for single panels that settled
The town calls itself the Star of the Prairie, and it sits at about 679 feet, with Main Street running off State Road 43. Before any work near the street, we check what the town requires.

Brookston Questions
Can you get a concrete truck into my Brookston alley?
Often, yes. If the truck cannot reach, we can wheel concrete in with buggies or use a pump. We check access during the estimate.
How do I stop water from running toward my house from the front steps?
The steps and walk need to pitch away from the house. When we rebuild them, we set a slight slope outward so water drains to the yard.
Is fall a good time to pour in Brookston?
Yes. Mild days and cool nights help concrete cure evenly. We stop pouring exterior work when freezing nights are forecast unless we can protect the slab.
