Concrete That Is Easy to Live With

Mulberry skews older than most towns near Lafayette, and concrete contractors here are often asked to make a house easier to get in and out of. At the 2020 census the town had 1,231 residents, a median age of 42.4, and more than a quarter (26.3%) aged 65 or over. About a third of its 447 households were a single person. For many of them, a cracked walk or uneven step is not just an eyesore. It is a fall waiting to happen.

Safer entries

When we rebuild Sidewalks & Steps with safety in mind, we focus on:

  • Even risers. Every step the same height so feet do not misjudge.
  • Deeper treads. Room for the whole foot.
  • A landing at the door. A flat spot to stand while you unlock or open a storm door.
  • Broom finish. Grip in rain and light snow.
  • Handrail-ready edges. We leave room to anchor a rail.
  • Fewer steps where the grade allows. Sometimes a gently sloped walk can replace a step or two.

Level walks

A lip of half an inch at a heaved joint is enough to catch a toe. We grind small lips flush where the slab is otherwise sound. Where panels are tipped or broken, Concrete Repair & Replacement means cutting out those sections and pouring new ones level with the rest.

Driveways with less upkeep

A cracked, pitted driveway takes work: patching, sweeping out weeds, salting ice that collects in low spots. A new Concrete Driveway with good slope sheds water, so less ice forms. A penetrating sealer every few years is about all it asks. If you are thinking about selling someday, a sound drive and walk help the house show well too.

A town with railroad roots

The plat was recorded by W. S. Perrin on October 1, 1858. A surveyor's mistake wrote the name down as Glicksburg, but the town was named for a mulberry tree growing where it began. Rails of the Lafayette, Muncie and Bloomington reached Mulberry around 1873, and in the early 1900s an interurban line stopped here too. Houses from many of those decades still stand, and their concrete has been through a lot of winters.

Working around your routine

If you rely on the front walk every day, losing it for a week is a real problem. We can phase the work: pour the steps first and keep a temporary path open, or replace the walk in sections so there is always a way to the door. Tell us how you come and go, including any mail, medical or delivery visits, and we will plan around them.

Why the base matters most

When a walk or step settles, the concrete is rarely the root cause. The ground under it compressed, washed out or heaved. That is why every replacement we do starts with digging out soft material and compacting crushed stone in layers. A sound base under a modest slab outlasts a thick slab on soft ground. It is the part of the job you never see, and the part we spend the most time on.

Other projects

  • Concrete Patios at grade with the back door, so there is no step down

Mulberry Questions

Can you replace steps with a ramp in Mulberry?

Concrete ramps need enough length to keep the slope gentle. We measure the rise at your door and tell you whether a ramp, a sloped walk or rebuilt steps fits the space.

Can you just fix the trip edge on my sidewalk?

If the slab is sound and the lip is small, we can grind it flush. If the panel is tipped or broken, we replace that section.

How do I keep a new driveway from icing over?

Good slope sends meltwater off before it freezes. Keep downspouts from dumping onto the drive, and use sand on new concrete the first winter.
